LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES
Skilled nursing care means skilled services that can be performed safely and effectively only by or under the direct supervision of a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse. In skilled nursing care, 24 hour supervision and medical treatment is rendered by a registered nurse, under the direction of a doctor. Administration of medicines, diagnostics, tube feeding, changing of wound dressings, and minor surgery is performed by or under the supervision of skilled professional or technical personnel. Skilled nursing care is usually provided on an inpatient basis at a hospital or skilled nursing facility under a doctor’s prescription. A service though unskilled will fall under the category of skilled nursing care, if because of special medical complications, its performance or supervision and the observation of a person necessitates the use of skilled nursing personnel. May be covered by Medicare on a limited term basis.
Intermediate care (see subacute care) is care provided to acute care patients who are medically stable but too unstable to be treated in alternative healthcare settings such as home, ambulatory, or traditional skilled long term care. Intermediate care facilities. Insurance does not usually cover intermediate care.
Rehabilitative care is any type of medical, therapeutic, or mental and behavioral health care that helps an individual maintain, regain, or improve function and skills. May be covered by Medicare on a limited term basis and based upon the patient's medical condition
Independent Living provides its residents with a continuum of care services if and when they are needed, seniors residing in the “independent living” portion of a facility—typically in apartment units or patio-style homes—are often living truly independently, without the need for long-term care services. (Long-term care services, also called assisted living services, refers to help with activities of daily living [ADLs] like dressing, bathing, using the toilet, food preparation, and so forth.) Not covered by Medicare or insurance other than Long Term Care coverage.
Assisted Living is a housing facility for people with disabilities or for adults who cannot or who choose not to live independently. Assisted living arrangements provide nursing care, housekeeping, and prepared meals as needed. Not covered by Medicare or insurance other than Long Term Care coverage.
Memory care is a form of residential long-term care that provides intensive, specialized care for people with memory issues. Many assisted living facilities, continuing care retirement communities and nursing homes have special memory care “neighborhoods” for dementia patients. Memory care is not covered by Medicare or insurance other than Long Term Care coverage.
